Georgia Emissions Extensions for Military, Student, Business, and Out-of-Area Exceptions

Do you qualify for an emisisons waiver?

You may qualify for an Out of Area Extension if you (or a family member) and your Georgia-registered vehicle are temporarily located well outside of the 13-county emission testing area of the state of Georgia due to school, military, or business obligations.

Out of Area Extensions are valid for a maximum of one year. You must apply for an Out of Area Extension each year prior to the vehicle registration renewal date. The vehicle must receive an emission inspection once it returns to the metro Atlanta area.

To apply for an Out of Area Extension, you (or a family member) and your vehicle must meet all of the criteria in one of the following categories. You (or a family member) must supply the required documentation listed beneath each category. Please note additional information may be required in order to process the Out of Area Extension.

Student Extensions

You need proof that the vehicle is out of area. Examples include a vehicle emission/safety inspection, traffic citation, repair receipt, statement from campus police/security or local police or completed Vehicle Verification Form verifying the vehicle is located out of the area. Documentation must identify the VIN, make, model and year of the vehicle and contain information that demonstrates visual or physical confirmation that the vehicle is located out of the area. Documentation must be dated within 60 days.

  1. Parking decals are not acceptable.
  2. Statements must be on the source's letterhead with contact information, indicating the vehicle is out of the area.
  3. Proof vehicle owner or family member is out of area. Examples include a current student transcript, student registration, tuition bill, or completed Student Verification Form (GCAF recommended). Documentation must identify the student and the school as well as show that the student is currently enrolled and currently attending classes. Documentation must include the semester/term start date and must be dated within 60 days. Documentation from the National Student Clearinghouse is not acceptable.
  4. Proof of ownership. Copy of Georgia registration or renewal notice (current or from last year) or Georgia title.
  5. Completed Out of Area Extension application.

Military Extensions

  1. Proof vehicle is out of area. Examples include a vehicle emission/safety inspection, traffic citation, repair receipt, statement from campus police/security or local police or completed Vehicle Verification Form verifying the vehicle is located out of the area. Documentation must identify the VIN, make, model and year of the vehicle and contain information that demonstrates visual or physical confirmation that the vehicle is located out of the area. Documentation must be dated within 60 days.
  2. Parking decals are not acceptable.
  3. Statements must be on the source's letterhead with contact information, indicating the vehicle is out of the area.
  4. Proof vehicle owner or family member is out of area. Examples include a copy of military orders which identify the applicant (current or original can be up to four years old) or a letter from the commanding officer. A copy of current military ID is required.
  5. A statement confirming the vehicle owner or family member's location and vehicle location from the commanding office on military letterhead is acceptable as proof the military person and vehicle are out of the area.
  6. Proof of ownership. Copy of Georgia registration renewal notice (current or from last year) or Georgia title.
  7. Completed Out of Area Extension application.Note: A proxy may submit the completed Military Out of Area Extension application and necessary documentation on behalf of eligible applicants. If submitting by proxy, the application must be completed and signed by the proxy. The documentation mentioned above must also be submitted with the completed application.

Business Extensions

  1. Proof vehicle is out of area. Examples include a vehicle emission/safety inspection, traffic citation, repair receipt, statement from campus police/security or local police or completed Vehicle Verification Form verifying the vehicle is located out of the area.. Documentation must identify the VIN, make, model and year of the vehicle and contain information that demonstrates visual or physical confirmation that the vehicle is located out of the area. Documentation must be dated within 60 days.
  2. Parking decals are not acceptable.
  3. Statements must be on the source's letterhead with contact information, indicating the vehicle is out of the area.
  4. Proof vehicle owner or family member is out of area. An employment verification letter on company letterhead, including contact information, stating the location where the motorist is working or completed Employment Verification Form (GCAF recommended). Documentation must be dated within 60 days.
  5. Proof of ownership. Copy of Georgia registration renewal notice (current or from last year) or Georgia title.
  6. Completed Out of Area Extension application.
